New floor concept for extra comfort in awnings

When camping in the spring and autumn, it can be a little draughty around the feet, and there can be condensation in the awning. The reason is of course our climate, which sometimes results in great differences in day and night temperatures.

This problem has been addressed by Isabella, Europe’s leading awning manufacturer, and Fibertex, another Danish company, in close collaboration with many experienced caravanners who permanently site their awnings. The solution is a brand-new floor concept which comprises four different layers.

First of all there is a special underlay called ”GroundCover”. This must be laid before the awning is erected, and it is best if it exceeds the awning size by approximately 30-50 cm all the way round. In this way the sides of the awning are protected against dirt and mud splashes, and the mud flaps do not become too dirty during the course of a season. This saves cleaning when the awning is taken down.

The new underlay is made of a thin, heat-treated and UV-resistant Fibertex material. This means that the surface can withstand the sun, and it does not attract gravel and twigs. Water can pass through it, which means that the earth underneath can breathe, which in turn means that the vegetation does not die.

The awning is erected on the special underlay, and the pegs are knocked through the underlay. A tarpaulin/groundsheet, which should go 10 cm up the edge of the inner sides of the awning, is then laid. The tarpaulin ensures that water does not penetrate into the awning. In this way many problems with condensation can be avoided.

The newly developed ”ComfortCarpet” – a 5 mm thick Fibertex carpet – is then laid on top of the groundsheet. Creating insulation that prevents draught from the ground. It counteracts the cold without absorbing the damp, and it is comfortable to walk on.

If a good quality awning carpet is then laid on top, the highest degree of comfort and a good internal temperature can be achieved.

Many permanent pitch campers use wooden or plastic tiles inside the awning. These can still be placed on top of the GroundCover with the other layers on top.

The new underlay and carpet products are marketed in the UK by Isabella, and they can be purchased at camping equipment retailers throughout the country. GroundCover is available in one-metre rolls with 2 m x 18 m for approx. £58.00. ComfortCarpet is available in rolls of 1.5 m x 15 m for approx. £98.00. Each roll would be sufficient for an average awning.
