Packing up your awning

Isabella Folding/PackingMany caravanners feel that folding their awnings is an incredibly laborious job, and there are many good solutions, according to which the awning is separated into as many parts as possible as well as many different folding methods.

The majority of Isabella awnings are packed up with fully zipped sides and gable ends, which means that the awning is assembled when erected. It is essential that the awning is as clean as possible and COMPLETELY DRY before it is folded. The roof is spread out on the carpet/underlay with the ceiling side downwards in order to protect the exterior coating. The gable ends are straightened out to the sides and folded well over the middle. The awning is folded another few times – still crosswise – until it has a suitable width for the awning bag.

The awning is rolled from the front and towards the rear edge so that the bead, which may be a little dirty from the rail, is outermost, and then the awning fits nicely into the bag. Winter and Universal awnings are folded according to the same principle.

The poles should be cleaned and dried thoroughly, and it is also important to remember to clean the movable parts to avoid any grains of sand being trapped. The poles are then ready to be stored in the pole bag, and it is generally easier to put in angled and cross poles first and leave the straight poles till last.

This is our way of packing up an awning, but once in a while we see some very creative solutions, and we have the greatest respect for caravanners who fold the roof separately and who protect the panels with windows from e.g. zip marks by folding them between cotton sheets. Another excellent way of protecting the windows is to roll the relevant panels loosely in between sheets onto a cardboard tube, but that may only be of interest to non-touring caravanners who only pack up once a year and who do not worry too much about the extra volume.
