The winter awning that can breathe

A good winter awning is not just a "plastic bag" that can keep the rain and the snow out. It is very important that a winter awning can breathe and has good ventilation. Otherwise condensation accumulates and this can freeze to ice inside the awning, and everything in the awning becomes soaking wet.

The Universal 240 from Isabella, the Danish awning manufacturer, has undergone long-term development and rigorous testing under almost brutal weather conditions. During the development process it was ascertained that the greatest challenge was not constructing an awning that could withstand snow and storms, but constructing one that could prevent the accumulation of condensation during the winter months.

The Universal 240 has a thick PVC base with an outside snow and grass edge that is secured firmly on the ground.

The sides are made of dyed Isacryl, a tent fabric that can breathe exceptionally well. The roof is made of a strong polyester/PVC canvas. Furthermore, there are various ways of creating ventilation, for instance in one of the sides.

For real winter campers an inner roof would be a good investment. This catches any drips of condensation, and the rest of it quickly evaporates from the full expanse of the roof.

Condensation cannot be avoided in winter. Heat that flows into the awning when the caravan door is opened will result in some condensation accumulating under the roof.

Moreover, experienced winter campers say that clothes and footwear can be dried in the awning if a gas heater is placed there.

The actual construction of the Universal 240 took its point of departure under extreme weather conditions. The roof has an extra cross construction at the centre of the framework, and there is a bend in the sloping roof so that the caravan door can be opened and so that snow can slide off.

For practical reasons the side doors are wider than on ordinary awnings. They can be opened from the roof, which is very practical if there is a snowdrift outside. Moreover, both sides and the front can be zipped half way down or removed completely.

The Universal 240 will this year be available in the colour combination tweed/sky-blue.

The Isabella winter awning product range also includes the models Snowboy and Capri Snow, which are equipped with fewer accessories.
