The discussion as to what makes the perfect flooring for caravan awnings has been going on for many years. Countless ideas have been tested some more successful than others, and experience has shown that it is the ground - the place where the caravan and the awning are positioned - which determines the best flooring to use.
Most caravanners know that the flooring in the awning is important if they want to avoid cold feet and rising damp from the ground below. Damp, in particular, causes a great deal of condensation inside the awning, which spoils the indoor climate. A good awning flooring, however, provides greater indoor comfort, which in turn enhances the joy of caravanning.
Following many years of intensive research, the Danish Isabella factory in Vejle has come up with a highly effective and comfortable floor construction which consists of four or five different layers.
The first step is to put down “Ground Cover”, which must extend approx. 30 cm beyond the awning on all sides. The GroundCover is a thin, very strong UV-resistant fibre cloth. The fact that the GroundCover exceeds the awning means that it also protects the against mud and wet grass, and that makes it far easier to clean the awning at the end of a long season.
Next the newly developed IsabellaFloor plastic tiles. They insulate against cold and damp and are very comfortable to walk on. They are easy to install and are simply snapped together with a patented click and tip system. They can be easily adapted for different sizes of the awning by cutting with a small saw.
A tarpaulin may be placed on top of the floor tiles for added protection against rising damp, but this is seldom necessary.
The next layer is the ComfortCarpet – a thick fibre underlay which functions as an insulating layer beneath the awning carpet, which is placed on the very top. Isabella’s awning carpet, Bolon, is especially suitable. It won’t slip or bunch up, it is easy to lay and very comfortable to walk on, even in bare feet on a cool spring or autumn day.
